@excid3 is another Linux twitter friend who just recently became an IRC friend. So here is the interview:
How long have you used Linux/BSD?
4 years as of December.
Why did you switch?
I was annoyed at Windows ME on my parent’s computer and always love to learn new things tech related. Things were crashing like you wouldn’t believe and I was just frustrated.
What is your Distro of choice and why ?
Ubuntu is my favorite. I started out on it initially and became absorbed in their forums. Searching for help getting my devices working was important and the community was incredibly nice. I wanted to give back so I began to collect information from the thread regarding our laptops at the time and put together a tutorial for everyone to check out. I got some incredible feedback for that and just fell in love with Ubuntu mainly for its community aspect.
Whats is the best Distro for a new user?
Ubuntu for sure. Great community gets it a first place and it’s become quite stable lately.
What your biggest pet peeve of the linux ecosystem (i.e. distros, people, website, etc.)
Audio! Who actually has pulseaudio working without issues???
Are you CLI, GUI or a little of both?
Definitely more a CLI guy than not, but GUI makes quite a few things simpler. It’s much more flexible from CLI standpoint and it’s also more impressive to noobs.
I’m also quite interested in applying minimalism to interface designs. I think a lot of things could benefit from it and so I do a fair amount of GUI use and development as well.
What do you think is lacking the most in Linux?
I think that a lot of the population would give it a shot if it was more game friendly. Sure we’ve got a handful of games, but it’s not quite what it needs to be to attract users. Things like compiz might be beautiful, but they aren’t enough to get people (like my roommate) to switch. Once steam gets ported to Linux, I think things will start changing significantly.
Why do you think Hardware manufacturers don’t support linux better albeit with closed source drivers?
It’s just the fact that Linux has such low market share. If it were more prominent, it would be less of an afterthought or “it’d be nice if we had linux drivers” to becoming a requirement.
How do you feel about the Windows vs. Linux bashing? from Window view and from Linux view
While at first, I’ll admit, I bashed Windows pretty hard. Those were the days of Windows ME though and things have come a long way since then. I still use Windows daily (for school purposes) and have been using Windows 7 for quite a while now. With as much work to be done to keep a single OS holding such a large amount of market share, I have to admit, Microsoft has done an exceptional job. People do not realize or appreciate the amount of work and money that goes into a product like that. Taking a closed source approach makes things much harder as users cannot easily patch and release fixes to bugs. All in all I believe the Windows versus Linux bashing is useless. Windows does a great job making the barrier to entry into computing extremely low. Linux is more hands on and not for the weak of heart, you’ve got to want to learn in order to use it. I feel they each have their place, but Linux is certainly where I fit in best.
Fill in the blank “Linux is _______”
